Casetta Tartuchino Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Podere Tartuchino is located in a traditional area of oil. In our town, Semproniano, there is the Olivone di Fibbianello, a thousand year-old specimen which bears witness, along with other huge trees around him, the tradition of this production. In 1988, upon our arrival at Tartuchino, we found a beautiful olive grove, over 90 years  old, with about 90 specimens, mostly Olivastra, on a gentle and panoramic hill.  We went on  recovering 25 plants of which had slipped the hedges vegetation.

From this piece of land overlooking the world our passion for oil was born.

We discovered the wonderful, comforting taste a bit bitter and a bit spicy of extra virgin olive oil! I say comforting because it means that the evo is rich in healthful polyphenols, as well as unsaturated fats; and it is also a source of vitamin E.

We did not know much about this magnificenti tree, seemingly originated in South Asia, and then moved to Egypt and Greece, spreading to whole Mediterranean area.

Fossil finds discovered in Negev witnesses tha 45.000 years ago human new it

The old roman historian, Columella, wrote “Olea primum arborum est” (“The olive tree is the primary tree”).

It is common in hystory to mention “anointed by the Lord”, and the branch that the  dove took to the Arch of Noe was from an olive tree; olive mention is frequent in Greek art and mithology.

Farming olive trees has become a passion for us. We take care of them, nourish them, trim them. We have learned how to do this work, respecting trees and fruits. That is why we do a precious harvest, sacrificing quantity to quality, careful not to damage the fruits, storing them in the right cases, placed in shaded areas, until we send them to the mill. The mill is an up to date one, treating the olives at low controlled temperature (27°), to keep the oil organic qualities. For the same reason, we carefully filter it, analize it, and store it in cellars with controlled temperature.

We use lightproof and airproof containers to avoid oxygenation.

We have nowadays a limited production. That is why we have added other plants, first of all Fibbianello Olivone, right in front of Casetta Tartuchino:  we got “children” of Olivone di Fibbianello through the Grosseto Agricultural School project.

The Olivone di Fibbianello was a huge olive tree. It is said that its height exceeded 20 meters and, in good years, it produced up to 800 kg of olives. In 1998 vandals set fire to its trunk, destroying much of this magnificent specimen.

Although it no longer has the grandeur of the past, the Olivone recovered and the Province of Grosseto – together with the Professional Technical Institute Leopoldo II di Lorena  – has planted the cuttings of the Olivone in some local farms to maintain its strong genoma.

In 2013 we planted 130 olive trees of the varieties Leccio del Corno and 10 Pendolini as pollinators. We hope they will produce soon!

On 2016, we added 270 Leccio del Corno more, together with 140 Moraiolo, 50 Pendolino, and 360 Leccino. and our evo obtained the european organic certification.

Once those will be giving fruits, we will be able to offer their different oil, straigh or blended

We believe that oil is a gift of Mother Earth, even more precious than wine. An ectar of olive trees produces much less than an ectar of wineyard.

Oil has to be consumed within 18 months, while wine ages with time.

A bottle of oil is on our table for  quite a while pleasing us and our guests, while wine flies away.

And so it is a pleasure to know that you will enjoy it.
